And so it has come… and passed. The day of cinematic reckoning and a day full of British rejoice and fanboy tears. The day when the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) reveal to the world, at the ridiculously early time of 5:00 a.m. PST, its nominees for this year’s Oscars. For people like me, it was quite a momentous occasion. For the rest of the world, it was simply another Tuesday.

Wow. It’s hard to believe I’ve deprived my readers of some Oscar Insight for over a month now. A lot has changed since mid-December: There was that whole “New Year” thing, the Wolf Pack helped fight their hunger for awesomeness by winning their first bowl game in five years and my (yes my, though I am willing to share) Green Bay Packers are heading to Super Bowl XLV (WOOT!). And yes, some changes have occurred in the awards race as well. Let’s play some catch-up, shall we?

December truly is my favorite and least favorite time of year. It’s my favorite because some of the year’s best movies are released and critic groups are honoring said movies left and right. It is a movie geek’s paradise.

Sadly, my role as a student takes precedence over my movie geek/critic duties, forcing me to concentrate on these bloody finals (No, I haven’t seen “The King’s Speech” yet, but I am still in the mood to use British slang. “Big whoop, wanna fight about it?”); hence the least favorite time. BLOG: Hollywood Briss – Oscar Insight, Week 2

And we’re off. The National Board of Review struck first and made a fairly definitive declaration that “The Social Network” is indeed the picture to beat over the next few months by nearly sweeping all the main categories:  Best Picture, Director (David Fincher), Actor (Jessie Eisenberg) and Screenplay. It wasn’t long after NBR that the Washington D.C. Critics followed suit, awarding “Network” Best Picture, Director and Screenplay. Fincher’s film, which is in fact the best-reviewed film since “Chinatown” in 1974, looks to win many more accolades over the course of the critic awards.
