December truly is my favorite and least favorite time of year. It’s my favorite because some of the year’s best movies are released and critic groups are honoring said movies left and right. It is a movie geek’s paradise.

Sadly, my role as a student takes precedence over my movie geek/critic duties, forcing me to concentrate on these bloody finals (No, I haven’t seen “The King’s Speech” yet, but I am still in the mood to use British slang. “Big whoop, wanna fight about it?”); hence the least favorite time. And we’re off. The National Board of Review struck first and made a fairly definitive declaration that “The Social Network” is indeed the picture to beat over the next few months by nearly sweeping all the main categories:  Best Picture, Director (David Fincher), Actor (Jessie Eisenberg) and Screenplay. It wasn’t long after NBR that the Washington D.C. Critics followed suit, awarding “Network” Best Picture, Director and Screenplay. Fincher’s film, which is in fact the best-reviewed film since “Chinatown” in 1974, looks to win many more accolades over the course of the critic awards.
